7 Reasons Why I Stopped Telling My Curious Kid "You Won't Understand" About Money

For the kid who asks why about everything. Even money.
When my nine-year-old's questions turned to money, I caught myself saying "you won't understand." This is the book I reach for now.

One brush-off is nothing. A hundred of them teach a curious kid that money is the subject nobody explains. So I found something that answers her for real: 50 big money questions, each answered on its own full-colour page with a picture and a real-world example, for ages 8 to 12.

Her curiosity is worth protecting

How Money Actually Works

My daughter's questions never stop at one, and money was where my answers ran out first.

She'd ask where money comes from, I'd say "from people's jobs," and she'd come right back with "but where does THEIR money come from?" With her it's always one more question. She's asking the next one before I've even finished the first.

This book is built around exactly those questions. "Why is paper money worth anything?" is question 3, and "Who decides how much money a country has?" sits right after it as question 4. When the next why comes, it's already on the next page.

02

Real answers, never baby answers

How Money Actually Works

Saving rules matter, and she already knows them. A rule just can't tell her why money works, and that's what she's asking.

Most kids' money books I found stopped at coins and piggy banks. This one goes where they stop: how the 2008 financial crisis happened (question 27), what money laundering is and why it's a crime (question 32), and why compound interest matters so much (question 12).

Every one gets its own full-colour page, explained at her level, without talking down to her.

Her questions finally have a home

How Money Actually Works

I used to be her answer machine. Now her money questions have somewhere to go.

Each question is one spread, so she can finish one in a few minutes and pick the next herself. Reading is something she does on her own, so the questions don't all land on me anymore. She comes to me with what she learned instead of what she wants to know.

I still answer plenty, but I don't have to become an economist every time she asks a really good one.

04

Even science kids get hooked

How Money Actually Works

Her why questions used to be about volcanoes and space. I worried a money book would feel like homework.

This one reads more like a book of mysteries. The questions are written the way kids actually wonder: could money disappear entirely one day, what money will look like in 2050, why some countries are rich and others poor.

It's full colour, one question per spread, made for ages 8 to 12.

You don't need the answers first

How Money Actually Works

Some of these I couldn't have answered either. Question 5, what happened when the US stopped using gold, was news to me.

That used to be the moment I'd brush it off and change the subject. Now I say "let's figure it out" and we open the page together.

The book does the explaining, and you'll learn right alongside her.

06

The whole story, in order

How Money Actually Works

The 50 questions run in order across five parts: The Story of Money, How the System Works, When Money Goes Wrong, Making & Growing Money, and Money & The World.

So by the time she reaches "Why do governments allow prices to rise?" (question 24), she's already read "Who decides how much money a country has?" (question 4). Front to back, it covers the whole story, from what people used before money existed (question 1) to how a card payment actually works (question 6) and what money will look like in 2050 (question 50).

Brush-offs add up quietly

How Money Actually Works

I think about the other version of this sometimes.

At nine, she asks why money is worth anything, and I'm tired, so I say "you won't understand." By eleven she wants to know what the bank actually does with it, and I go with "It's not something you need to worry about right now."

None of those moments is a big deal on its own. Enough of them, and a curious kid learns that money is the one thing grown-ups won't explain, so she stops bringing those questions to me.

This book is how that version never happens in our house. Every brush-off becomes a page we can open, and the next question is right behind it.

Saving is a good start. This book answers everything she asks after it.
